Introduction
Volume 31 continues the flow of Chapter 6 (the “kaniṣṭha-adhikārī” wave) in Vichāra Sāgara. According to the PDF listing, this volume begins at a later portion of the enquiry sequence (after the earlier volumes) and deals with deepening the enquiry into the one-Self, the dissolution of bondage, and the manner of abiding in the realised state under the subtler aspects of non‐dual teaching. Thus it is geared toward the seeker who has done initial enquiry, and is now facing more refined issues about identity, freedom, clarity, and the transition from “knowing” to “being”. Benefits of Studying This Volume
By studying Volume 31 you can gain several meaningful benefits:
- You obtain a more refined clarity about your true nature beyond body-mind, and how the earlier enquiry turns into abiding realisation.
- You deepen the shift from being a seeker to resting as the ever-free Self — the volume helps bridge that zone.
- You dissolve subtler remaining knots of identification, assumption, and subtle striving which may be lingering from earlier stages.
- You integrate the non‐dual teaching into your being rather than just your intellect — this supports practical living of the insight in everyday life.
- You build stability: as you read and apply, your sense of “I-am-the-Self” becomes more abiding and less theoretical. Click view PDF.

Simple English Meaning
Lord Krishna speaks:
“O noble one, remove attachment (rāga), greed (lobha), hatred (dveṣa), and lust (kāma) from your heart.
These emotions arise from Rajas (passion) and Tamas (ignorance) and block noble thoughts.
As long as the mind acts under rajas and tamas, true knowledge remains hidden.
Without becoming free from these qualities, spiritual wisdom cannot arise.
Therefore, strive to withdraw the mind from rajas and tamas, giving up all lower tendencies.” Click view PDF.

Spiritual Benefit (Why this teaching matters)
This verse beautifully reveals the inner secret of peace:
Attachment creates dependence
Greed creates dissatisfaction
Anger consumes peace
Fear and delusion distort reality
Removing these leads to:
Calm, clear mind
Knowledge of the Self
Freedom from suffering
Real happiness that depends on nothing outside
This is the heart of yoga:
purifying the mind so that divinity already inside can shine. Click view PDF.

How to Study
Here is a recommended method to study Volume 31 effectively:
-
With a guide or teacher: Because the topics are subtle and may easily be misinterpreted, guidance can help you navigate the “inner shifts” rather than just intellectual comprehension.
-
Sequential reading: Start from the beginning of Volume 31 and proceed in order — the author designs the enquiry to build progressively.
-
Reflective questions after each section:
• “What am I still holding onto as ‘I’ or ‘mine’ here?”
• “Is my sense of identity shifting from ‘I do’ to ‘I am’?”
• “Does this teaching touch my life, or remain as theory?” -
Meditative assimilation: After reading each major portion, sit quietly and allow the teaching to sink in. Rest as the awareness that the volume points to. Notice subtle changes in your sense of being. Click view PDF.
-
Journalling: Keep a journal noting:
• insights and doubts that arise;
• moments when you notice you’re still in “seeker mode” vs when you rest as the Self;
• changes in how you live, behave, respond. -
Integration into life: Take the teaching off the page and into daily life — watch how you relate to your thoughts, roles, actions, and see how the insight invites a shift in orientation. Click view PDF.

Why Study
Here are strong reasons why you should study Volume 31:
- Because the enquiry path does not end with “I know I am the Self” — the next phase is “I abide as the Self” and live accordingly. Volume 31 helps you with that.
- Because without this deeper integration the teaching stays on the surface and the seeker may oscillate between insight and ordinary identity. This volume supports steadying the insight.
- Because many texts stop at initial realisation; this volume addresses the subtler side of living non‐duality — the subtle hang-ups, the remaining unconscious identifications, the natural shift into being.
- Because you’ve already done earlier volumes (vol. 1-30) and this one helps carry forward the momentum and deepen your foundation rather than starting afresh.
- Because the goal is not remote — this volume helps you to see the truth you already are, and live from it now, not just later. Click view PDF.

How Many Times to Study
Here’s a suggested rhythm for how often and how deeply to engage with Volume 31:
- First pass: Read the volume once through to grasp the scope, major themes, and flow of enquiry.
- Second pass: Read more slowly, annotating key statements; pause after each topic and reflect on your own state of being.
- Third pass (and further passes): Combine the reading with meditation, journalling and life‐observation. After each section, rest in awareness and see how your identity is shifting.
- Periodic revisiting: As your enquiry deepens over months and years, revisit Volume 31 (e.g., every 6-12 months or when you sense stagnation) — you’ll discover new layers and insights as you evolve.
- Lifelong companion: Recognise that this text is not just for once‐only reading but becomes a living resource: return to particular sections when you feel you’re slipping back into “seeker” identity or doing for result. Click view PDF.
Conclusion
Volume 31 of Vichāra Sāgara is a crucial and rich text for the earnest seeker who is beyond initial enquiry and ready for deeper integration and realisation. When studied sincerely, it helps shift you from “I am the seeker” to “I am the Self that is free and abiding”. The teaching moves from just knowing to living. In that lived shift lies the essence of freedom. If you approach this volume with openness, reflection and integration, it can support a genuine, steady realisation and transformation—not merely intellectual understanding but embodied insight.
