Bhagavad Gita – gita – Chapter 17 – Śraddhā-Traya Vibhāga Yoga – Part – 2

Why should we study the Gita? (Why study at all?)

a) For clarity of life

The Gita is not just a religious book. It answers:

  • Why am I confused?

  • What is my duty?

  • How do I act without stress or guilt?

Arjuna was intelligent and skilled, yet confused. Krishna did not give him rituals — He gave him understanding.

“न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते” (4.38)
There is nothing as purifying as knowledge.

So we study to remove confusion, not to collect information. Click view PDF.

b) For emotional strength

Studying the Gita:

  • reduces fear

  • builds inner stability

  • teaches how to face success and failure equally

It trains the mind, just like exercise trains the body. Click view PDF.

c) For right action (Dharma)

The Gita teaches:

  • What to do

  • How to do

  • With what attitude to do

Without study, actions become:

  • impulsive

  • ego-driven

  • regret-producing

With study, actions become calm, purposeful, and clean. Click view PDF.

2. How many times should we study per day?

There is no benefit in studying many hours without digestion. Krishna emphasizes quality over quantity.

Ideal practice (recommended)
Once or twice a day is enough
  • Morning (best): mind is calm and fresh

  • Evening (optional): reflection after daily life

Even 15–20 minutes daily is powerful if done sincerely.

Avoid these mistakes

❌ Studying for long hours occasionally
❌ Skipping many days
❌ Reading fast without understanding
❌ Studying only when problems arise

3. How should we study? (This is the most important part)

Step-by-step Gita Study Method
Step 1: Begin with respect (not fear)

Before studying, sit quietly for a minute.
You may say softly:

“ॐ नमो  भगवते वासुदेवाय”

This prepares the mind.

Step 2: Read ONE verse only

Do not rush.

For each verse:

  1. Read the Sanskrit (slowly)

  2. Read the meaning

  3. Ask:

    • What is Krishna teaching here?

    • How does this apply to my life? Click view PDF.

Step 3: Reflect (Mananam)

Reflection is more important than reading.

Ask yourself:

  • Where do I act like Arjuna?

  • Where do I resist this teaching?

  • How can I apply this today?

Even one sentence understood deeply is enough for the day.

Step 4: Apply one small action

Example:

  • Practice equanimity today

  • Control speech

  • Do one duty without expectation

This converts knowledge into wisdom. Click view PDF.

Step 5: End with silence

Sit quietly for 1–2 minutes.
Let the teaching settle.

4. How NOT to study (very important)

❌ As an exam subject
❌ To show knowledge to others
❌ Jumping randomly between chapters
❌ Only memorizing verses
❌ Comparing interpretations endlessly

Krishna says knowledge must lead to inner transformation, not pride.

5. Best order to study (simple & safe)

If you are a regular student:

1️⃣ Chapter 2 – Foundation of knowledge
2️⃣ Chapter 3 – Karma Yoga
3️⃣ Chapter 6 – Mind control
4️⃣ Chapter 12 – Bhakti
5️⃣ Chapter 17 – Faith
6️⃣ Chapter 18 – Integration

Then read other chapters slowly.  Click view PDF

6. How long should one study the Gita in life?

The honest answer: for life.

Why?

  • Each stage of life reveals a new meaning

  • The same verse speaks differently at different ages

The Gita is not finished — we grow into it

7. One final, simple rule

Study less. Understand more. Live it. Click view PDF.

Conclusion

Chapter 17 – Śraddhā-Traya Vibhāga Yoga reveals that faith (śraddhā) is not a passive belief but an active orientation arising from the three guṇas of nature. It shapes the way we worship, eat, sacrifice, give, and practice austerity. Krishna’s teaching encourages moving toward sattvic faith — pure, selfless, and aligned with scriptural wisdom — because such faith leads to clarity, peace, and spiritual progress. Without true faith, rituals and practices can become empty or even misdirected.
